The Food Divide

This article, The Food Divide, by Christopher D. Cook, published several weeks ago in the SF Bay Guardian shows the importance of Uhuru Jiko as an economic development project that aims to transform the black community by opening up a commercial kitchen that will facilitate the opening of small food businesses, nutrition, health, cooking classes and a community garden in East Oakland. The conditions in East Oakland are similar to those in the Bayview neighborhood of San Francisco. This is why Uhuru Pies is such an important fundraiser, getting resources to fund these community-based programs.

Uhuru Pies Partners with SF Business and Non Profit for Holiday Fundraiser

On Tuesday and Wednesday, November 22nd and 23rd, 2011, Uhuru Pies will present its delicious holiday pies on the streets of San Francisco with Rocket Dog Rescue - a volunteer based organization serving the greater Bay Area, dedicated to saving homeless and abandoned dogs from over crowded animal shelters - in front of When Modern Was, the store with one-of-a-kind, high quality painted furniture in unexpected colors and distressed detail.

Uhuru Pies funds go to support black community economic development such as the Uhuru Jiko, Swahili for "Freedom Kitchen," coming to the Oakland Uhuru House community center to create a hub of economic and cultural life in the African community of East Oakland, which bears the brunt of unemployment and home foreclosures.

The project will empower the community by bringing in much-needed resources.

Uhuru Pies met Rocket Dog Rescue at the San Francisco Green Festival and felt that she has always felt aligned with the organization. "I've known about Uhuru for years and love what they do," says Pali Boucher, director and founder of the volunteer organization that is dedicated to saving homeless and abandoned dogs from over crowded animal shelters.

Boucher used her connections to secure the site for Uhuru Pies, which makes its delectable five flavors available for ordering for pick up in front of When Modern Was on Tuesday and Wednesday, November 22nd and 23rd between 11am and 6pm. To order ahead of time, go to:
